Music

Music is a vital part of the life of Townsville Grammar School.

The Townsville Grammar Music Centre was opened in 2001. The spacious main teaching and rehearsal space has a grand piano, electronic keyboards and iMac computers with up-to-date composition software. The teaching studios are all air conditioned, with mirrors, keyboards and pianos. The Annandale Campus has a dedicated Music space called the Arts Cottage.

The Music Programme comprises three general spheres:

  • Curriculum Music
  • Ensembles
  • Instrumental-Vocal Tuition

Curriculum Music

Curriculum Music in all year levels involves Performing, Composing and Analysing, with considerable emphasis on developing aural skills through singing and listening. Curriculum Music is an academically meritorious subject that entails aural, visual and kinaesthetic ways of learning. The link between music education and academic and social development in people has been demonstrated in many scientific studies and is now widely accepted among educational institutions.

Junior School

In the Junior School, all children receive two half-hour Music classes each week. In Year 3, one of the music classes involves participating in the Year 3 Strings Programme.

Middle School

In the Middle school, all students in Year 7 attend a Music class each week. Music as an Elective extension subject is available for students in Years 8 and 9. Music in Year 8 and Year 9 is designed specifically for students who have an interest in, and are motivated to develop music knowledge and skills.

Senior School

In the Senior School, Music is an elective subject in Years 10, 11 and 12. Townsville Grammar also offers the advanced course, Music Extension, for Year 12. In Music Extension students choose to specialise in performance, composition or musicology and undertake an investigating task. Music Extension must be taken in conjunction with the parent subject, Senior Music.

For students in Years 11 and 12 who study for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, Music is offered at standard and higher levels.
