Information Technology

The ability to work confidently with information and communication technologies is a necessary life skill in the 21st century.

Information Technology at Townsville Grammar encourages students to develop the knowledge, skills, processes and attitudes that are required for effective participation in the community as responsible and capable users of information technology.

Years 7-9

In Year 7, all students study Information Technology with their core class teacher. In Years 8 and 9, students choose to study either Music or Information Technology with a specialist teacher.

The four themes which form the basis of study in Information Technology in Years 7 to 9 are accessing and constructing digital information, digital communication and publishing, interfacing with machines and participating in online communities

Within these four themes, students learn network procedures, introductory and intermediate use of word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software as well as the principles of desktop publishing for use in most software applications.  They are introduced to databases and they use the World Wide Web for research purposes and email for communication.  They collect, download and edit digital images and audio clips.  They learn animation techniques and introductory programming principles.

Year 10

Year 10 students may choose to continue their studies in Information Technology as an elective subject. Students in Year 10 I.T. are expected to develop self-reliance, personal responsibility, self management, the ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to think critically and constructively about situations and practices involving computer and associated technologies.

Within the four themes of accessing and constructing digital information, digital communication and publishing, interfacing with machines and participating in online communities, students learn to develop Web pages for a particular audience, design and programme a robotic device, design and produce a game in Adobe Flash and design and create a multimedia presentation.

Years 11-12

Information Processing and Technology (IPT) provides students with the knowledge, skills, processes and understanding of information technology. It involves an examination of a rich variety of present day situations but its focus is on skills such as analysis, synthesis, evaluation and communication. It emphasises the processes of problem identification and the design and implementation of solutions to specific situations rather than the use of specific software applications. IPT is an intellectual discipline that involves a study of the six core areas of algorithms, relational information systems, software programming, Structured Query Language, human-computer interaction and social and ethical issues associated with the use of information technology. Students engage in a wide variety of practical and theoretical learning experiences.
