Futsal provides a gateway to the world

Year 9 student Mitch McGrath has been selected to play Futsal for Australia during an upcoming tour of Brazil. In the tour of Brazil Australia’s Futsal team will be competing against teams from regional teams within Brazil culminating in a highly competitive match against the Brazilian national team.

This is an Under 15’s competition and players have been chosen from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and other eastern states.

To be selected Mitch played in a highly competitive local trials competition, which took him to a Queensland State competition in January this year.  In this competition teams from all states in Australia and a team from New Zealand, competed with NZ ultimately taking out the winning honours.

Mitch learned of his Australian team in February this year and has been training since February for the national tour this month.

The players have all now arrived in Brazil and are currently in an intense training camp for a week before taking on the regional sides.  This week will be the first time the team has had a chance to train together, although each player has been training individually.

Mitch said, “In preparation for this big opportunity each player has been working on their weaknesses and personal fitness levels.”

Mitch continued, “I am very grateful for this opportunity to be involved in this tour. Improving my overall skill level through this experience is something I am really looking forward to. Winning some of the big games against Brazil would be an added bonus.”
