Jillian‚??s Day ‚?? Sun-smart Free Dress Day

This week is Townsville Grammar School’s annual Sun-smart Week. The week concludes on Friday with ‘Jillian’s Day’, a sun-smart free dress day to raise much needed funds for cancer research and support.

Jillian’s Day has been set aside in our calendar each year since the passing of Jillian Hardy on the 5th October 1998. Jillian was a 16 year old Grammarian who died after a short battle with cancer. The period of time between her diagnosis with a melanoma and her death was frighteningly short.

Jillian was an exceptional young lady who managed to fit so much into her short life. She had a very sharp sense of humour which she maintained even when very ill. Her zest for life and her commitment to everything she did whether it be her beloved basketball, hockey, drama or schoolwork was inspirational for all who knew her. Jillian’s number 11 basketball singlet, with a photograph of Jillian is framed and on permanent display in the Centenary Gymnasium.

Grammar students will wear sun-smart, free dress on Friday and are encouraged to make a donation to the Queensland Cancer Council.

Queensland has the highest rate of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (bcc) and squamous cell carcinoma (scc) within Australia. One of the main reasons Townsville Grammar has a strict hat policy for students and staff on all three campuses is to encourage sun safety by role modelling. Sunscreen is available at key locations around the campuses for students to use.
