Twenty-two intrepid Year 10 Students embark on the South Passage

Twenty-two intrepid Year 10 boys and girls from Townsville Grammar School will this week set sail on a South Passage trip. They will board at the marina this Wednesday afternoon for four days, sailing along the east coast of Australia taking students on an adventure and receiving lessons in team building and self-reliance.

The South Passage is a 100-foot gaff-rigged schooner, built specifically for adventure sailing and education.  This will be a journey up to Hinchinbrook and back and perhaps a journey of self-exploration as well, as the students build towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Students are grouped on watch duties and often work “all hands on deck”. They will rotate around deck duties such as helming, lookout and recording entries in the ship‘s log, as well as tacking and gybing. There are, of course, maintenance duties, such as cleaning, however, students will get to enjoy off-ship activities such as snorkelling and exploring.

Our students are being taken out of their comfort zones and challenged to find new physical and independence skills.  Leadership skills are built as they are living together and working together to bring the ship home safely, on Sunday 29 July, at 4.00pm.
