Thu 23rd May
Commencing today (Monday February 27) Townsville Grammar School students will participate in our annual TGS Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week.
At North Ward, Years 7 and 8 will participate in the ‘Life Education’ programme - the largest, independent, Australian health and drug provider for school children aged 5 -13. Our Junior School students at Annandale and North Shore Campuses will also participate in this programme.
Year 9-12 will participate in a range of age specific activities and conversations from the ‘Positive Choices Learning Resources’, a comprehensive resource for all drug and alcohol related information for educators, parents and students.
Our Drug and Alcohol Awareness campaign is supported by a school-based Year 7-12 First Aid Course and a range of Faculty based curriculum initiatives that occur across all campuses.
The topics covered will include practical components such as – the Australian Alcohol Guidelines and standard drinks; assessing levels of risk; assertiveness; finding support; the influences and reasons for teenage use of illicit substances and alcohol consumption; associated myths and, caring for your mates. Related, current and evidence based fact-sheets and information booklets are also available for use in Form/Faculty class discussions. The information provided is presented in a factual, open-minded and non-judgemental manner that will provide students and teachers permission to conduct, what would normally be perceived as, ‘difficult and sensitive conversations’.
