Thu 23rd May
Dear Townsville Grammar School community,
It is with great pleasure that I introduce Mr Timothy Kelly as the incoming Principal of Townsville
Grammar School. Mr Kelly’s appointment follows an international search by the Board of Trustees,
assisted by Odgers Berndtson Executive Search. The position attracted an outstanding field of applicants
from across Australia and internationally, reflecting the excellent reputation of the School.
Mr Kelly will join Townsville Grammar School from his current position as Deputy Headmaster of
Toowoomba Grammar School, a position in which he has served since 2007. Prior to his appointment at
the Toowoomba Grammar School, Mr Kelly spent 9 years (1998–2006) at the Anglican Church Grammar
School (‘Churchie’), appointed first as a teacher of Economics and Accounting and then in 1999 as Head of
the Accounting Department and the Faculty of Business. Prior to his career in education, Mr Kelly worked
in the finance industry, holding positions with Chase Manhattan and Suncorp Building Society.
Mr Kelly attended Brisbane Grammar School and subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Economics
(UQ) and a Bachelor of Business in Accountancy from Queensland University of Technology, followed by a
Graduate Diploma of Education and Master of Educational Studies from the University of Queensland.
The research project for his Master’s degree focused on how students of different ethnic backgrounds
constructed identity in a complex, globalised world.
As the Deputy Headmaster at Toowoomba Grammar School, Mr Kelly has responsibilities that extend
across the entire reach of strategic and operational priorities for the school. His responsibilities include all
curriculum, co-curriculum and student wellbeing programmes as well as student welfare and behaviour;
staff recruitment, performance and development; policy development and implementation; information
technology and facilities. He has served as Acting Headmaster on many occasions, in some instances for
extended periods of time.
Mr Kelly considers that one of his most important achievements is the encouragement of a stimulating, balanced and inclusive educational environment in which students feel comfortable to take appropriate risks to challenge their intellectual, physical and personal growth. Throughout his term as Deputy Headmaster at Toowoomba, he has consistently sought to promote innovation, creativity and technology while ensuring the School’s history and traditions continue to be valued. In presenting his application for the role of Principal to the Board of Trustees, Mr Kelly expressed his view that a school should be a place where each individual is known and understood, where strong values are reflected in positive, supportive relationships and where excellence as well as effort are duly celebrated.
In terms of co-curricular activities, Mr Kelly has coached both rugby and rowing and he is a keen supporter of the arts.
Mr Kelly will take up his duties at the beginning of 2018.
The Board of Trustees is delighted with the appointment of such an outstanding person to serve as the 12th Principal of Townsville Grammar School and we invite all members of the School community to join us in welcoming Mr Kelly and his family to the School and to Townsville.
JUDGE STUART DURWARD SC
Chairman of the Board of Trustees
