Four Townsville Grammar School students were recently awarded prizes at the internationally recognised competition of the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition.
The competition, held in July, attracts outstanding musicians from around the world who perform works from concerto and opera repertoire with professional accompanists. Beginning in 1980, originally as a piano concerto competition, it has now grown in size in reputation, with entrants coming from worldwide including Moscow, Poland, New Zealand and South Korea.
Jasmine Lee, Year 12, was awarded the special award of Youth Development Award, which came with a prize of $400. Krishna Patel also Year 12, was awarded the Arties Music Encouragement Award (Vocal). Michael Carroll, Year 10, was awarded third prize in the Young Performer Soloists (Townsville & District Music Teachers Association). Past Grammarian, Bianca Bacchiella (Year 12, 2015) was awarded third prize in the Vocal Section.
The competition offers a wonderful opportunity for emerging musicians to be stimulated and extended. The adjudicators are recognised both nationally and internationally for their expertise and interest in encouraging musical development.
The next Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition will be held next year, from 21 to 25 of July, 2017.
