Year 12 student, finalist for the 2017 Somerset National Poetry Prize.

Year 12 Townsville Grammar School student, Brendan Pierotti, has been announced as a finalist for the 2017 Somerset National Poetry Prize.

The IB student at TGS was the only North Queensland student to be shortlisted in this National competition. This is not the first time Brendan’s gift for writing poetry has been nationally recognized; he was also awarded winner last year in the Australian Bush Poetry Competition.

The inspiration for Brendan’s poem titled A Ballad of Sunflowers came after his Dad planted a paddock of sunflowers on the farm in Giru and the town was inundated with social media visitors & professional photographers.

Brendan’s poem plays on his love of Giru and explores the effects of a new tourist attraction in his hometown “Giru hasn’t much – it’s a bit out of touch – But the sunflowers compensate all…”

You can read the full poem here:

The Somerset National Poetry prize is part of the 2017 Somerset Celebration of Literature. The competition is open to all Australian high school students, to encourage a love of writing poetry and to affirm it as a worthwhile literary pursuit.  It is a wonderful opportunity for serious student writers, encouraging them in their literary growth.
