Wed 6th February
Last Friday, thirteen creative Townsville Grammar School Drama students competed in the ADSPACE High School Advertising Challenge.
This competition is run by QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in conjunction with The Communications Council and has been for operating for 7 years. Previously, only with students from the Brisbane area participated. This year, TGS Principal, Mr Tim Kelly, invited QUT to include Townsville Grammar School students in this valuable real-world experience.
The students spent the day with QUT Business School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations mentor Kate Hemsley-Hackett and Head of Drama, Fiona Perry. They were able to “zoom” in to join their Brisbane high school peers who were onsite at the QUT campus. The Townsville students were also mentored by Stephen Beckett, the General Manager of Community Engagement & Cultural Services for the Townsville City Council.
During the day, leading industry advisors and QUT mentors in Brisbane coached the students using face time, training them towards their goal of creating an ad campaign for the 2018 client The Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
The students learnt how to approach advertising creatively, and how to exploit technology and social media to target an audience. The teams competed on their ability to convince the client of commitment and passion and whether they could present their pitch with style and integrity.
At 2.00 pm all teams were judged by leading Advertising Industry Executives. In this, their first year, Townsville Grammar School students delivered their advertising campaign pitch for “Colour the Coral” with accomplishment and were awarded second place.
