Music

The Townsville Grammar School Music Program is widely renowned, with an extensive co-curricular program supporting curriculum Music from Junior School through to Secondary School.

The Townsville Grammar Music Centre at the North Ward Campus is a dedicated teaching and rehearsal space with a grand piano, electronic keyboards and the latest composition software. The teaching studios are air conditioned, with mirrors, keyboards and pianos.

The Music Program comprises three components:

  • Curriculum Music
  • Ensembles
  • Instrumental-Vocal Tuition

Classroom Music

Curriculum, or classroom Music, is where students make and respond to music through listening, performing and composing. They learn about the elements of music and gain an understanding of the range of styles and contexts.

In the Junior School, students receive weekly Music classes, introducing a Strings class in Year 3. In the Secondary School, all students in Year 7 have a weekly Music class. Music as an elective extension subject is available for Years 8 and 9 students. Music is an elective subject in Years 10-12. An advanced course, Music Extension, is also available for Year 12.

Music is also offered for the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) for students in Years 11 and 12 at Higher and Standard Levels.

The skills learnt in the classroom are applied in ensemble participation offered in both the Junior and Secondary School. Through ensemble participation, students learn the skills of performing with others, the discipline of rehearsal attendance and exposure to a wide range of opportunities, including performances and tours.
