The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme is a highly regarded curriculum offered in schools around the world, for students in Years 11 and 12.

Townsville Grammar School is proud to be an accredited IB World School and privileged to be a part of this international community of teachers and learners. Townsville Grammar School is the only Grammar School to offer the IB Diploma, and the only school in the North Queensland region to offer this course.

About the International Baccalaureate Diploma

The course is designed and administered by the IB Organisation (IBO), based in Geneva, Switzerland and examined by an international Body of Examiners representing many cultures and countries.
It is an internationally recognised two year course of study for Year 11 and 12 students preparing them to proceed to tertiary education. It is a sought-after diploma which qualifies students for entry into both Australian and international universities.
The IB Diploma emphasises high academic standards, critical thinking, intercultural understanding and respect for others. Its broad curriculum ensures students are provided with a range of skills and knowledge to equip them well for the complex and global community in which they live.
The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who can help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
The IB works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

IB Diploma Requirements

Students must study six IB subjects from the six subject groups. Students are required to select a minimum of three subjects and a maximum of four subjects of the six subjects at the Higher Level.

Irrespective of the subject level of the subject, the results are awarded on a 1- 7 scale.

Students also need to complete the following core elements to a satisfactory standard:

Extended Essay (EE)
Theory of Knowledge (ToK)
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

We aim to offer the following subjects, dependent on demand and viability:

Group 1 - English Language & Literature (HL&SL)

Group 2 -Spanish (ab initio), French (SL), Japanese (SL)

Group 3 - Psychology & Economics (HL&SL)

Group 4 - Physics, Biology & Chemistry (HL&SL)

Group 5 - Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (HL&SL)

Group 6 - Theatre Arts, Music & Visual Arts

IB Outcomes

The results earned by Townsville Grammar School students in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, when benchmarked against global, regional and national averages are impressive, with the average result of TGS students exceeding these benchmark averages.

Globally, approximately 25% of candidates earn IB scores better than 36 (out of 45).
