Australian Education Awards - Finalists
Townsville Grammar School has been named a finalist in the 2026 Australian Education Awards in the prestigious Regional School of the Year category.
Presented by The Educator, the Australian Education Awards recognise outstanding educators, leaders and schools that make a significant impact on their students, communities and the broader education sector. Widely regarded as Australia’s leading independent education awards, the program celebrates excellence across schools nationwide.
Principal of Townsville Grammar School, Mr Connor Barrett, said the recognition was a proud moment for the entire school community.
“We are both proud and humbled to be named a finalist in these national awards alongside other outstanding schools from across Australia, including fellow Queensland schools in Cairns and Rockhampton,” Mr Barrett said.
“This category recognises schools that make a significant educational impact in their region through consistently high standards of teaching and learning, as well as strong academic achievement.
Founded in 1888, Townsville Grammar School has served the North Queensland community for 138 years and is widely recognised for delivering an exceptional education and outstanding student outcomes in a very traditional, values-based environment.”
Today, the School employs more than 360 staff and supports more than 1,200 families across three campuses from Pre-Prep to Year 12, day and boarding, making a substantial contribution to both the regional education landscape and the local economy.
Mr Barrett said the finalist recognition reflects the dedication and professionalism of the School’s staff, students and families.
“This honour belongs to our entire Grammar community. It acknowledges the commitment of our teachers and staff, the enthusiasm and achievements of our students, and the strong, ongoing support of our families.”
In further recognition of the School’s teaching excellence, Year 1 teacher, Mr Joel Connolly has also been named a finalist in the Rising Star of the Year section – a category for early career educators.
Mr Connolly is one of just eight teachers from across Australia selected as finalists in this category.
“It is wonderful to see Joel’s talent, dedication and impact recognised on a national stage,” Mr Barrett said. Joel’s achievement is reflective of our teaching staff at Grammar and our shared commitment to delivering an exceptional education.”
Winners of the Australian Education Awards 2026 will be announced in Sydney on Friday, 7 August 2026.
