QLD Students Developing Leadership Skills & Service Mindsets
At Townsville Grammar School, the development of leadership skills and a service mindset is considered one of the hallmarks of a Grammar education. Every student has the opportunity to explore leadership within themselves and to develop a service-leadership mindset, which will help them to be contributing and respectful members of society beyond school. Learn more about our commitment to educational leadership that makes us one of the leading private schools in Queensland.
Early Introduction to Service at Townsville Schools
The earlier students at our Townsville schools are encouraged to get involved in community service, the more likely they will make giving back part of their normal life. We introduce Junior School students to community service through involvement in charity fundraisers, school theme-weeks and community events. Students can join the Junior School Community Service Group, EarlyAct, which focuses on local, national and international causes. The group often works collaboratively with the Secondary School's Interact Club. Students at Townsville Grammar School are also regularly involved in school or community-based events and activities, helping them to learn about the needs and causes of the wider community and environment.
Leadership Development at Private Schools in Queensland
Leadership opportunities increase as the children progress through Junior School. In combination with learning about personal character strengths through the Positive Education program, students develop awareness of self-responsibility and respect for both themselves, others and their environment through leadership and service opportunities and activities. The Melior Exi Program is an example of leadership learning in action at private schools in Queensland. In Year 6, students are invited to and encouraged to participate in the Melior Exi Program, a year-long commitment to developing a new skill, outdoor adventuring, teamwork and collaboration.
Ongoing Service & Leadership at Townsville Schools
In Years 7-12, community service and leadership opportunities continue, again supported by ongoing learning through the Positive Education program. Examples of leadership and community service in action are:
- The Duke of Edinburgh program
- camps and tours
- opportunities to work with local charities and foundations
- involvement in the annual Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp
